How it works

Every unit is converted through square metres using exact definitions: a hectare is 10,000 m², an are is 100 m² (the Finnish “aari”, the same unit), a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m² because a foot is 0.3048 m, and an acre is 43,560 square feet or exactly 4,046.8564224 m². So 1 acre is about 0.4047 ha, and 1 m² is about 10.764 sq ft.

The definitions come from NIST Special Publication 811 and the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985. The hectare and the are are metric units accepted for use with the SI.

The acre here is the international acre. The older US survey acre differs by about 0.0004 %, which only matters in land surveying.

What is an are, or aari in Finnish?

An are (aari in Finnish) is 100 m², a square 10 m on each side. A hectare is 100 ares. It is mostly used for plot and garden sizes.
