How it works
Force is mass times acceleration. The SI unit is the newton (N): the force that speeds up one kilogram by one metre per second every second. Every unit here is converted through newtons.
Kilogram-force and pound-force are the weight of one kilogram or one pound under standard gravity, 9.80665 m/s². So 1 kgf = 9.80665 N exactly and 1 lbf = 0.45359237 × 9.80665 ≈ 4.4482 N. A kip is 1,000 lbf, a dyne is 0.00001 N and a poundal accelerates one pound by one foot per second squared.
The definitions come from the BIPM SI Brochure and NIST Special Publication 811. Real weight varies a little with place, because gravity does; these units use the standard value.
