How to use

  1. Type the consumption you know, such as 8 L/100 km or 30 mpg.
  2. Pick the unit it is in and the unit you want. Use the switch under the result for an electric car.

How it works

Fuel economy is told in two opposite ways. Europe says how much fuel a car burns over a set distance (litres per 100 km), so a smaller number is better. The US, UK and others say how far a car goes on a set amount of fuel (miles per gallon, km per litre), so a bigger number is better. Converting between the two means taking a reciprocal, which is why 30 mpg and 60 mpg are not as far apart as they sound.

L/100 km = 100 ÷ (km per litre) = 235.215 ÷ mpg (US) = 282.481 ÷ mpg (imperial). The numbers come from a mile being 1.609344 km, a US gallon 3.785411784 L and an imperial gallon 4.54609 L. For example, 30 mpg (US) is 235.215 ÷ 30 = 7.84 L/100 km. For electric cars, kWh per 100 km works the same way, and 1 Wh/km is 0.1 kWh/100 km.

A US gallon is smaller than an imperial one, so the same car shows a higher number in imperial mpg (about 20 % more). The result is the same fuel use measured differently; real consumption also depends on driving, load and weather.

Frequently asked questions

Why are US and UK mpg different?

They use different gallons. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 litres, so the same car gets about 20 % more imperial mpg than US mpg.

Is a higher or lower L/100 km better?

Lower. It is the fuel used over 100 km. For mpg and km/L it is the other way round: higher is better.

How do I convert mpg to km/L?

Multiply US mpg by 0.425 (1.609344 ÷ 3.785411784). For imperial mpg multiply by 0.354.

How do I compare an electric car with a petrol car?

kWh/100 km and L/100 km both measure energy use per distance, but a litre of petrol and a kWh of electricity are different energies and prices. Compare running costs instead, with a fuel cost calculator.

Why can I not enter zero consumption?

Distance per unit of fuel is the reciprocal of consumption. Zero L/100 km would require division by zero when converting to mpg or km/L.
