How it works

Every unit is converted through pascals, the SI unit (one newton per square metre). A hectopascal is 100 Pa (the same as a millibar), a kilopascal is 1,000 Pa, a bar is exactly 100,000 Pa and a standard atmosphere is exactly 101,325 Pa. A pound-force per square inch (psi) is about 6,894.757 Pa, so 1 bar is about 14.504 psi.

Millimetres and inches of mercury are conventional units: the pressure of a column of mercury at a fixed density and standard gravity. 1 mmHg is about 133.322 Pa and 1 inHg about 3,386.389 Pa. They are used for blood pressure and for weather and aircraft altimeter settings.

The definitions come from the BIPM SI Brochure, the 10th General Conference on Weights and Measures (standard atmosphere) and NIST Special Publication 811. The converter does not tell gauge pressure (above the air around you, as on a tyre gauge) from absolute pressure; it converts the number you give it.

Frequently asked questions

How many psi is 1 bar?

About 14.504 psi. Multiply bar by 14.504, or divide psi by 14.504 to get bar.

What is standard atmospheric pressure?

One standard atmosphere is 101,325 Pa, which is 1,013.25 hPa, 1.01325 bar, about 14.696 psi or about 760 mmHg.

Is a millibar the same as a hectopascal?

Yes. 1 hPa equals 1 millibar, which is why weather maps use either one.

Does this convert gauge pressure to absolute pressure?

No. It changes units only. To get absolute pressure, add the local atmospheric pressure to the gauge pressure in the same unit.

How do I convert kPa to bar?

Divide by 100: 250 kPa is 2.5 bar. The pressure reference stays the same.
