How it works

Every unit is converted through watts using exact definitions: a kilowatt is 1,000 W, a megawatt is a million W, mechanical horsepower is 550 foot-pounds of force per second (about 745.7 W), metric horsepower (PS) is 75 kilogram-force metres per second (735.49875 W), and a BTU per hour is a British thermal unit spread over an hour (about 0.293 W). So 100 kW is about 134.1 hp.

The watt comes from the BIPM SI Brochure; the horsepower and BTU definitions from NIST Special Publication 811.

Horsepower comes in several versions. This converter has the mechanical (imperial) horsepower and the metric one, which differ by about 1.4 %. Car makers outside the US usually quote metric.

Frequently asked questions

How many watts are in a horsepower?

About 745.7 W for mechanical horsepower and exactly 735.49875 W for metric horsepower (PS).

How many kilowatts is 100 hp?

About 74.57 kW with mechanical horsepower, or 73.55 kW with metric horsepower.

How many BTU/h is a kilowatt?

About 3,412 BTU/h. Air conditioners and heaters are often rated in BTU/h.

Is power the same as energy?

No. Power is how fast energy is used (W, kW, hp). Energy is the total (J, kWh). A 1 kW heater running for one hour uses 1 kWh.

Can I convert watts to amps without a voltage?

No. For direct current, current = power ÷ voltage. AC calculations can also need the power factor; this tool only converts power units.
