How it works

Every unit is converted through metres per second using exact definitions: 1 km/h is 1,000 m per 3,600 s, a mile is exactly 1,609.344 m so 1 mph is 0.44704 m/s, and a knot is one nautical mile (exactly 1,852 m) per hour. So 100 km/h is 100 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 62.14 mph, and 1 knot is exactly 1.852 km/h.

The mile comes from NIST Special Publication 811 and the nautical mile from the BIPM SI Brochure. Feet per minute (0.3048 m per 60 s) is the unit pilots use for climb and descent.

Mach is not offered. A Mach number is a fraction of the speed of sound, which changes with air temperature and altitude, so there is no single factor to convert it by.

Frequently asked questions

How many mph is 100 km/h?

About 62.14 mph. Divide km/h by 1.609344, or multiply by 0.6214.

How fast is a knot?

Exactly 1.852 km/h, or about 1.151 mph. One knot is one nautical mile per hour, used at sea and in aviation.

How do I convert m/s to km/h?

Multiply by 3.6. For example 10 m/s is 36 km/h.

Can I convert speed to running pace?

Pace is time per distance, so use 60 ÷ speed in km/h for minutes per kilometre. At 12 km/h the pace is 5 min/km; pace is not an output unit here.

Can I convert Mach with a fixed multiplier?

No. The speed of sound changes with temperature. Use the airspeed calculator when you know the flight conditions.
