How it works

Most of the world uses the ISO paper sizes. They all share one proportion: the long side is the short side times the square root of two (about 1.414). That means a sheet cut in half across its long side keeps the same shape, so A4 halves into A5, A5 into A6 and so on. A0 is defined as one square metre of paper, and each step down halves the area.

The sizes are rounded to whole millimetres: A0 is 841 × 1189 mm, so A4 is 210 × 297 mm, which is 8.27 × 11.69 inches. The B series sits between the A sizes (B0 is 1000 mm wide) and the C series, used for envelopes, sits between A and B so an A4 sheet fits a C4 envelope. North America uses its own sizes in inches: Letter is 8.5 × 11 in, Legal 8.5 × 14 in and Tabloid 11 × 17 in.

A point is 1/72 of an inch, the unit of printing and PDF. Sizes in the table are the nominal ones; printers and trimming allow a tolerance of a millimetre or two.

Frequently asked questions

What is the size of A4 in inches?

210 × 297 mm is 8.27 × 11.69 inches, or 595 × 842 points.

Is A4 the same as US Letter?

No. Letter is shorter and wider: 216 × 279 mm against 210 × 297 mm. A document laid out for one can print with a little extra margin on the other.

Why is the ratio 1 : 1.414?

Because the square root of two is the one proportion that stays the same when a sheet is cut in half, so copying A4 onto A3 or A5 needs no stretching or cropping.

What are the C sizes for?

Envelopes. A C4 envelope (229 × 324 mm) takes a flat A4 sheet, and a C5 takes A4 folded once.

Does turning a sheet sideways change its paper size?

No. Portrait and landscape use the same sheet. The size finder checks both orientations, so you can enter the two measured sides in either order.
