How it works

Every unit is converted through litres using exact definitions: a millilitre is 0.001 L, a cubic metre is 1,000 L, a US liquid gallon is 231 cubic inches or exactly 3.785411784 L, and an imperial (UK) gallon is exactly 4.54609 L. So 1 L is 1 ÷ 3.785411784 ≈ 0.26417 US gallons, and 10 US gallons is about 37.85 L.

The definitions come from NIST Special Publication 811 (US gallon), the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 (imperial gallon) and the BIPM SI Brochure (litre and cubic metre).

The two gallons are different sizes: the imperial gallon is about 20 % larger than the US gallon. Check which one a label or a fuel price uses.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres are in a US gallon?

Exactly 3.785411784 L, about 3.785 L. Multiply gallons by 3.785 to get litres, or divide litres by 3.785 to get gallons.

Is a UK gallon the same as a US gallon?

No. An imperial gallon is 4.54609 L, about 20 % bigger than a US gallon at 3.785 L.

How many millilitres are in a litre?

A litre is 1,000 mL, and also 1 cubic decimetre. A cubic metre is 1,000 L.

Can I convert litres to kilograms?

Only if you know the substance’s density. Mass in kg equals volume in litres multiplied by density in kg/L; this tool only converts volume.

Is a cubic centimetre the same as a millilitre?

Yes, exactly: 1 cm³ = 1 mL. So 500 cm³ is 500 mL, or 0.5 L.
