How to use

  1. Enter the appliance's power in watts or kilowatts. It is usually printed on its label.
  2. Enter how many hours a day it runs and how many days you want to cover.
  3. Enter your electricity price per kWh. Read the energy and cost for the period, a day, a month and a year.

How it works

Electricity is billed by energy, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). One kWh is what a 1 000 W appliance uses in one hour. So the energy an appliance uses is its power times the time it runs, and the cost is that energy times your price per kWh.

For a power of P watts used h hours a day for d days, the energy is P ÷ 1000 × h × d kWh. A kilowatt-hour equals 3.6 megajoules (BIPM SI Brochure). A month here is a twelfth of a 365-day year.

The label power is a maximum or typical figure; many devices draw less most of the time, and some draw power on standby. Your bill may also have a fixed fee, taxes or a price that changes by time of day, which are not included.

Worked example

What does 100 W used 8 hours a day for 30 days cost at €0.25 per kWh?

  1. 100 ÷ 1000 × 8 × 30 = 24 kWh.
  2. 24 × €0.25 = €6.00.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my appliance's power?

On its rating label or in the manual, in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). Some labels give amperes and volts instead; multiply them to get watts.

Why is my real bill different?

Appliances rarely run at full power all the time, and bills include fees, taxes and sometimes prices that vary by hour. This tool multiplies the numbers you enter.

Does standby power count?

Only if you add it. Enter the standby power and the hours it is on standby as a second calculation.

Which currency is used?

The one you choose. Nothing is converted, so enter the price in the same currency.

Can I compare two appliances?

Run the calculation for each with the same hours, days and electricity price. The difference in cost shows the saving under those assumptions.
