How to use

  1. Choose the document: its photo size and rules appear at once.
  2. Choose a photo of your face taken straight on against a plain, light background. It is not uploaded.
  3. Zoom and move the crop with the sliders until the top of your head and your chin sit between the guide lines.
  4. Download one photo file, or a 10 × 15 cm print sheet with several copies to cut out.

How it works

Passport and ID photos must have an exact size, and the head must fill a set part of it, so that border machines can compare your face with the photo. The tool cuts a part of your photo with exactly the right shape and resizes it to the size the rules give, with lines that show where the crown of the head and the chin must fall.

Print sizes are in millimetres; the pixels follow from the print resolution: pixels = millimetres ÷ 25.4 × dpi. A 35 × 45 mm photo at 300 dpi is 413 × 531 pixels. Finland's decree also places the head: crown 4–6 mm from the top and chin 7–9 mm from the bottom of a 47 mm photo. Where the rules give only the head height (UK 29–34 mm), the guide centres the head. Files with a size limit are saved at the highest JPEG quality that fits it.

The tool cannot judge light, shadows, expression or background, and some countries accept only photos taken by a studio, an approved booth or the office itself; for German passports and ID cards it shows only the rules. The office that receives the photo decides, so check its page, linked under the rules, before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is cropped and saved in your browser and never leaves your device.

What size is a passport photo?

It depends on the country: the UK, France and Germany use 35 × 45 mm, the US 2 × 2 inches, Finland 36 × 47 mm and Canada 50 × 70 mm. Choose the document to see its size, head height and file rules.

Can I print the photos at home?

Choose the print sheet: it puts as many copies as fit on a 10 × 15 cm (4 × 6 inch) photo print at 300 dpi. Print it at 100 % size on photo paper or at a photo shop, and cut along the gaps.

Can I take my own passport photo?

For a UK passport someone else may take it, and for an online application you upload it uncropped. For a US passport a professional service is recommended. Finland, Canada and France accept only photos from a studio or an approved booth; there this tool helps you check a photo. In Germany the office or a registered photographer must supply the photo, so the tool shows only its rules.

How do I get a photo for a German passport or ID card?

Since 1 May 2025, offices in Germany accept only digital photos: taken at the office, or by a registered photographer who uploads the photo and gives you a code to bring. A printed 35 × 45 mm photo is still accepted only when you apply at a German mission abroad.
