How it works

A working day here is a Monday to Friday that is not a public holiday in Finland. Saturdays, Sundays and the holidays are skipped. Midsummer Eve and Christmas Eve are not statutory holidays, but the annual holidays act treats them like holidays and almost every workplace is closed, so they are skipped too. New Year's Eve is a normal working day.

To count between two dates, the tool goes through each day in the range and keeps the Mondays to Fridays that are not holidays. From Monday 14 December to Monday 28 December 2026 there are 15 calendar days, 4 of them weekend days and 2 of them holidays on a weekday (Christmas Eve on Thursday and Christmas Day on Friday), which leaves 9 working days. If you turn off counting the start and end dates, only the days between them are counted.

When you add working days, the start date itself is not counted: one working day after a Friday is the next Monday, or the Tuesday if Monday is a holiday. Only Finnish holidays are included, from 1992 to 2100, so a company's own days off, regional holidays and other countries' holidays are not taken into account.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturday a working day?

Not here. The count uses the usual five-day week, Monday to Friday. The Finnish annual holidays act counts Saturdays when it works out holiday days, so a leave calculation can give a different number.

Is Christmas Eve a working day in Finland?

No. It is not a statutory holiday, but the annual holidays act lists it, with Midsummer Eve, among the days that are not working days, and most workplaces are closed. The tool skips it.

Does it work for other countries?

Not yet. Only Finnish holidays are included. Weekends are skipped for any country, but the holidays of other countries are not.

Can I subtract working days?

Yes. Enter a negative number in Add working days to count backwards.

Is the starting date counted when adding days?

No. Counting starts after that date; adding zero keeps the original date even on a weekend.
