How to use

  1. Type a size such as AA or CR2032, a name printed on a battery such as LR44 or 357, or a device such as smoke alarm.
  2. Pick a type to see only household, coin, button, hearing aid, photo or lithium-ion batteries.
  3. Select a row to see its drawing, dimensions, voltage and every other name it is sold under.

How it works

The same battery is sold under many names. An AA is also a Mignon, LR6, MN1500 or 15A. The international standard IEC 60086 gives every size a code that tells the chemistry and the shape: in LR6 the L means alkaline, the R round, and 6 is the size number. R6 is the zinc–carbon version and HR6 the rechargeable NiMH one. Coin cells carry their size in the code: a CR2032 is a lithium (C) round (R) cell 20 mm across and 3.2 mm thick.

The voltage depends on the chemistry, not on the size. Alkaline and zinc–carbon cells give 1.5 V, NiMH rechargeables 1.2 V, silver oxide 1.55 V and lithium coin cells 3 V. A 9 V battery is six 1.5 V cells in series (6 × 1.5 V = 9 V), and a 4.5 V flat pack three. Lithium-ion cells such as the 18650 give 3.6 V; the 14500 is as big as an AA but has more than twice its voltage, so it can destroy a device made for AA batteries.

The drawings are our own outlines, drawn to each battery's proportions from its standard dimensions. The dimensions are the maximum the standard allows; real batteries are often a few tenths of a millimetre smaller. Where two sizes share a slot, check the thickness: a CR2025 fits where a CR2032 goes but makes poorer contact.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an AA battery?

At most 14.5 mm across and 50.5 mm long. Its IEC name is LR6 (alkaline) and it is also called Mignon, MN1500 or 15A.

Can I use a CR2025 instead of a CR2032?

Usually yes, both are 20 mm across and 3 V, but the CR2025 is 0.7 mm thinner and holds less charge, so contact may be loose and it runs out sooner.

Are LR44, AG13 and 357 the same battery?

They are the same size, 11.6 × 5.4 mm. LR44 and AG13 are alkaline (1.5 V); 357 and SR44 are silver oxide (1.55 V), which keeps a steadier voltage and lasts longer in watches and cameras.

Can I use rechargeable batteries instead of alkaline ones?

Usually. NiMH rechargeables give 1.2 V instead of 1.5 V, which most devices handle well. A few devices, such as some clocks and smoke alarms, are made for alkaline only; check the manual.

Is an 18650 the same as an AA?

No. An 18650 is 18 mm across and 65 mm long, and gives 3.6 V. It does not fit an AA slot, and the AA-sized 14500 lithium-ion cell must never replace an AA battery because of its higher voltage.

What do the colours on hearing aid batteries mean?

The tab colour gives the size: 10 is yellow, 312 brown, 13 orange and 675 blue. They are zinc–air cells that start working when the tab is pulled off.
