One day-fine and the total fine from your net income and dependants, by the Finnish Criminal Code.
How to use
- Enter your average monthly net income: what is left after taxes and statutory contributions.
- Add the dependants you support: a spouse and children under 18.
- Enter the number of day-fines from the penalty notice or the sentence. The total fine and one day-fine appear at once.
How it works
In Finland most fines are day-fines. The offence sets the number of day-fines, and your income sets the money amount of each, so the same offence costs a high earner more than a low earner. This tool applies only to Finnish fines.
One day-fine is a sixtieth of your monthly net income after a basic deduction of 255 €: day-fine = (net income − 255 €) ÷ 60, less 3 € for each dependant, with the cents dropped and never less than 6 €.
The rules are in the Criminal Code (Rikoslaki), chapter 2 a, and the government decree on the amount of a day-fine (609/1999). The police, the prosecutor or the court sets the final amount from tax records, so this is an estimate. Fixed fines (rikesakko) for minor offences are set amounts, not day-fines.
Worked example
What do 12 day-fines cost with €3,255.00 monthly net income and no dependants?
- (€3,255.00 − €255.00) ÷ 60 = €50.00.
- €50.00 × 12 = €600.00.

Frequently asked questions
Which income counts?
Your average monthly income less the taxes and statutory contributions on it. The authority usually reads it from your latest tax data, so enter what those records would show.
How many day-fines can one sentence have?
From 1 to 120 day-fines. When several offences are sentenced together as one joint fine, it can have up to 240 day-fines.
What is the smallest possible day-fine?
6 €. However low your income, one day-fine is never set below that.
Why do dependants lower the fine?
Supporting a spouse or minor children leaves less money to pay with, so 3 € per dependant is taken off each day-fine.
Can this calculate the number of day-fines for an offence?
No. Enter the count from the authority’s notice; the calculator estimates the money amount only.
