How it works

An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is a bank account number in one international format: a two-letter country code, two check digits and the country's own account number. The check digits catch almost every typing mistake before money is sent to the wrong account.

To check them, the first four characters are moved to the end and every letter becomes a number (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35). Divided by 97, that long number must leave a remainder of 1. The method is ISO 7064 MOD 97-10, used by the IBAN standard ISO 13616.

A valid IBAN only means it is typed consistently. It doesn't prove the account exists or belongs to the person you are paying, and the length each country uses is not checked here. Your bank verifies the rest when you pay.

Worked example

How is FI21 1234 5600 0007 85 formatted for a bank transfer?

  1. Remove spaces: FI2112345600000785.
  2. The check digits are 21; the general structure and checksum pass.

FI2112345600000785. This does not verify the account or its owner.

Frequently asked questions

Can a wrong IBAN still pass the check?

Very rarely. The check catches every single mistyped character and almost every pair of swapped neighbours, but not every combination of several errors.

Does a valid IBAN mean the account exists?

No. It only shows the number is internally consistent. Only the bank can confirm the account and its owner.

Why do IBANs have different lengths?

Each country fits its own account number after the first four characters. A Finnish IBAN has 18 characters, a German one 22.

Is my IBAN sent anywhere?

No. The check runs in your browser, and the IBAN is left out of the page address and shared links.

Does this check each country’s required IBAN length?

No. It checks the general 15–34 character range and checksum, not the national length or account-number rules.
