How to use
- Choose Text to braille and type or paste your text. The braille cells appear as you type, ready to copy.
- To read braille, choose Braille to text and paste the cells (Unicode braille characters, for example copied from a braille display or from this tool).
- A capital letter, a number or a letter right after a number gets a small sign in front of it; these are part of the code, not mistakes.
First five braille letters

|---|---|---|
| a | ⠁ | 1 |
| b | ⠃ | 12 |
| c | ⠉ | 14 |
| d | ⠙ | 145 |
| e | ⠑ | 15 |
How it works
Braille writes each letter as a cell of up to six raised dots in two columns of three. This tool writes Unified English Braille (UEB), the code English-speaking countries agreed on, in its uncontracted form (grade 1): every letter has its own cell. The Unicode braille characters it produces can be copied into documents, labels and braille displays.
Some cells have more than one job, so signs tell them apart. The first ten letters, a to j, are also the digits 1 to 9 and 0 when the number sign (dots 3456) comes first. The number sign keeps counting through digits, commas and full stops, so 1,000 needs it once, and a letter from a to j right after a number needs the letter sign (dots 56): 3b is the number sign, 3, the letter sign and b. A capital letter gets dot 6 in front; a whole capitalised word gets it twice, and three or more capitalised words in a row get it three times and an end sign.
The rules come from The Rules of Unified English Braille (2013) of the International Council on English Braille. Contracted braille (grade 2), which shortens common words, is not covered, and neither is mathematics, music, accents or computer braille.

Frequently asked questions
What is uncontracted braille?
Braille where each letter has its own cell. It is how braille is usually first learned. Contracted braille (grade 2) saves space with short forms for common words and letter groups.
Why does a number start with an extra cell?
The digits use the same cells as the letters a to j. The number sign tells the reader that the next cells are digits.
Can I print the braille?
The result is text made of Unicode braille characters. Printing or embossing it needs a font or a device that shows braille cells; the dots are in the same place as in the cells.
Which punctuation does the tool know?
Full stop, comma, semicolon, colon, question and exclamation marks, apostrophe, hyphen and dash, quotation marks, round and square brackets and the slash. Other characters are listed as having no cell.
Can this translate braille in any language?
No. It uses uncontracted Unified English Braille. Other languages and contracted braille need their own rules.
