How it works

Packs of different sizes cannot be compared by their price alone. The unit price tells you what one kilogram, one litre or one piece costs, so packs can be ranked fairly. Units may be mixed: 500 g and 1 kg are brought to the same measure.

The unit price is the pack's price divided by its quantity in kilograms, litres or pieces. For example, a 500 g pack at €2.50 costs 2.50 ÷ 0.5 = €5.00 per kilogram, and a 1 kg pack at €4.50 costs €4.50 per kilogram, which is 10 % less. The EU price indication directive (98/6/EC) calls the unit price the easiest way to compare products. Pounds and gallons use their exact definitions: 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg and 1 US gal = 3.785411784 l.

The comparison only relates price to quantity. It does not account for deposits, multi-buy discounts, quality or whether you can use everything before it expires.

Worked example

What is the price per kilogram for 750 g costing 3?

  1. Convert the pack size: 750 g = 0.75 kg.

Unit price: 3 ÷ 0.75 = 4 per kilogram.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the unit price useful?

Pack sizes vary, so the pack price does not show which is cheaper. A price per kilogram or litre makes packs comparable.

Can I compare grams with kilograms?

Yes. Units of the same kind, such as g, kg, oz and lb, or ml, l and gallons, are converted correctly.

What if the products are measured differently, such as kilograms and litres?

You compare one kind at a time: weight, volume or pieces. Kilograms and litres cannot be compared with each other.

Is the lowest unit price always the best choice?

Not always. If you cannot use a large pack before it expires, a smaller one may save more.

How do I compare a multi-buy offer?

Enter the total price and total quantity you would buy. For three identical packs, multiply each pack’s quantity by three.
