How to use

  1. Choose A4 or Letter paper and portrait or landscape orientation.
  2. Set square spacing and equal margins in millimetres.
  3. Print or download a file. Use matching paper, 100% or actual-size scaling, and disable browser headers and footers.

How it works

The grid uses evenly spaced squares measured in millimetres. The preview fits your screen; it is not a physical ruler. A partial strip at the right or bottom edge keeps every complete square the same size.

The number of complete columns is floor((W − 2M) / S): W is page width, M is the margin and S is square spacing, all in millimetres. Rows use page height instead. A4 is 210 × 297 mm; two 10 mm margins leave 190 mm across, enough for 38 squares of 5 mm. Page sizes follow W3C CSS Paged Media; absolute lengths follow CSS Values and Units (1 inch = 25.4 mm).

PDF and SVG preserve physical page dimensions. PNG uses 300 pixels per inch, so A4 is 2480 × 3508 pixels after rounding. Your printer margins and fit-to-page settings can still change the printed size. Check a square with a ruler before using the sheet for measured work.

Worked example

How many full squares fit on A4 with 10 mm margins and 5 mm spacing?

  1. Usable width: 210 − 2 × 10 = 190 mm.
  2. Usable height: 297 − 2 × 10 = 277 mm.
  3. Divide each usable side by 5 and round down.

The grid has 38 full columns and 55 full rows.

Frequently asked questions

Is a square exactly 5 mm?

The file uses your chosen spacing. The printed square is 5 mm only when the printer preserves actual size. Check with a ruler.

Should I choose A4 or Letter?

Choose the paper loaded in your printer. A4 is 210 × 297 mm; Letter is 215.9 × 279.4 mm. Spacing and margins are always in millimetres.

Why is there a partial square at an edge?

The available area may not divide evenly by the spacing. The grid leaves the remaining strip instead of stretching the squares.

Which format should I print?

PDF is convenient for printing a page at actual size. SVG preserves sharp lines at any zoom. PNG is a 300-dpi image; check its print size in your image viewer.

Why does the preview look smaller?

The preview shrinks to fit your screen. Its proportions match the paper, but its on-screen squares are not a ruler.

How do I stop print scaling?

Select 100% or actual size instead of fit to page. Select the matching paper size and turn off browser headers and footers. Printer settings vary.
