How it works

Phones can join a Wi-Fi network from a QR code. The code holds a short line of text in a format that the camera apps of iPhone and Android recognise: the network name, the security type and the password. Scanning it offers to join, so nobody has to type a long password.

The text looks like WIFI:T:WPA;S:Guests;P:correct horse;; where T is the security (WPA also covers WPA2 and WPA3), S the network name and P the password. A hidden network adds H:true. Because ; , : " and \ separate the parts, they get a backslash in front, so a network called Café;Bar becomes S:Café\;Bar.

The card also prints the name and password in a typeface where 0 and O, 1, l and I look different, for laptops and for anyone who prefers typing. Network names are at most 32 bytes and WPA passwords 8–63 characters, as the Wi-Fi standard requires.

Your password is used only in this browser tab: it never goes into the address, a shared link or our server. Anyone who can see the card can join your network, so a separate guest network is a good idea.

Frequently asked questions

Which phones can scan the code?

iPhones with iOS 11 or later and most Android phones from Android 10 on join from the built-in camera. Older phones need a QR reader app.

My router says WPA2 or WPA3. Which do I choose?

Choose WPA, WPA2 or WPA3: the code uses the same type for all three, and the phone agrees on the right one with the router.

Is it safe to print my password?

The card is as safe as a note with the password on it: anyone who sees it can join. Use a guest network if your router has one, and change its password when you want to cut off old guests.

Can I save the card as a PDF?

Yes: press Print and choose Save as PDF as the printer. You can also download the QR code alone as a PNG or SVG image.

Will the card still work after I change the Wi-Fi password?

No. Generate and print a new card with the new password. The old QR code keeps the old credentials.
