How to use

How it works

Every Finnish company, association and sole trader gets a business ID (Y-tunnus) when it registers. It has seven digits, a hyphen and a check digit, such as 0112038-9. The check digit catches most typing mistakes.

The seven digits are multiplied by the weights 7, 9, 10, 5, 8, 4 and 2, and the products are added up. The remainder of that sum divided by 11 decides the check digit: a remainder of 0 gives 0, others give 11 minus the remainder. A remainder of 1 gives no digit, so no ID is issued with those digits. This is the Finnish Tax Administration's rule; old six-digit IDs get a 0 in front.

The EU VAT number of a Finnish business is FI followed by the eight digits without the hyphen: FI01120389. A valid check digit doesn't mean the business exists or is active: check that in the Finnish Business Information System (YTJ).

Worked example

What check digit completes 0112038?

  1. 0 × 7 + 1 × 9 + 1 × 10 + 2 × 5 + 0 × 8 + 3 × 4 + 8 × 2 = 57.
  2. 57 = 5 × 11 + 2; 11 − 2 = 9.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a company's business ID?

Search the company's name in the Finnish Business Information System (YTJ). Business IDs are public.

What is the VAT number of a Finnish company?

FI and the business ID without the hyphen, for example FI01120389. It is valid for VAT only if the company is in the VAT register.

Why do some business IDs start with 0?

Older IDs had six digits. They are written with a leading zero so that every ID has seven digits before the hyphen.

Is this the same as a personal identity code?

No. A personal identity code (henkilötunnus) identifies a person and uses a different format; a sole trader still gets a separate business ID.

Can I paste a VAT number starting with FI?

Remove FI first and enter the remaining digits. The checker accepts the Finnish business ID, not the VAT prefix.
