Turn text into flag semaphore figures, or read a letter from the positions of the two arms.
How to use
- Choose Text to figures and type your text. A figure appears for each letter, with the signaller facing you.
- Digits are sent with the Numbers sign first, using the signs of A to I and K for 1 to 9 and 0. The Letters sign (the same as J) ends the numbers. A space is the rest position.
- To read a sign, choose Arms to letter and set the right and left arm. The signaller's right arm is on the left of the picture.

How it works
Flag semaphore sends letters at a distance with two flags. The signaller holds one flag in each hand and stretches each arm in one of eight directions, 45 degrees apart: up, down, out sideways and the diagonals in between, and across the body. Each letter is one pair of positions.
The signs here follow the table of the Australian National Botanic Gardens, written as left and right arm positions. In the drawing, an arm's angle is counted from straight up, turning away from the body: out is 90 degrees, down 180, and the positions across the body 225 and 315. For example, A is the right arm 135 degrees (low) with the left arm down.
Digits reuse the signs of A to I and K after the Numbers sign, and the sign of J tells the receiver that letters follow. Semaphore has no punctuation here, and the rest position for a space is not part of that table: it shows both arms hanging down. Real signals also need agreed ways to start, correct and end a message.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the signaller's right arm on the left of the picture?
The figure faces you, as a signaller faces the person reading the flags, so their right arm is on your left.
How are numbers sent?
First the Numbers sign, then the signs of A to I for 1 to 9 and K for 0. To go back to letters, send the sign of J.
Are there signs for punctuation?
Not in the table used here, so the tool lists characters it cannot sign.
Can I send lowercase letters?
Yes. Letter case does not change the flag positions; the alphabet uses the same sign for both cases.
Does this include attention and error signals?
No. It covers letters, numbers and the rest position, not the full set of procedural signals.
