Oil pressure

The engine oil pressure is too low, so the engine is not being lubricated properly.

Stop safely as soon as possible and switch off the engine. Check the oil level when the engine has cooled; do not drive on with the light on.

How it works

Dashboard lights use a colour system like traffic lights. Red means a possibly serious fault: do not set off, and if it comes on while you drive, stop where it is safe. Amber means something needs checking or maintenance soon. Green and blue lights only tell you that something is on, such as the dipped headlights or cruise control. Many lights come on for a moment when you start the car; that is a bulb check and normal.

The symbols themselves are largely shared across makes, because the international standard ISO 2575 defines the shapes and UN Regulation 121 says which ones a car must show and in which colour. That is why an oil can means oil pressure and an exclamation mark in a circle means the brakes in almost every car. The drawings here are our own simple versions of those shapes.

Example: a red battery symbol while driving means the battery is no longer being charged. The car keeps running on the battery for a while, so switch off what you can do without and drive to a garage or a safe place before it stops. Makers still differ in details, so the owner's manual is the final word for your car.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with a red warning light?

No. A red light means a possibly serious fault. Stop where it is safe, switch off the engine and check the manual; for oil pressure, engine temperature or brakes, do not drive on.

What does the amber engine light mean?

The engine management system has found a fault. The car can usually be driven, but have the fault codes read soon. If the light flashes, slow down and get it checked straight away, as misfiring can damage the catalytic converter.

Why did all the lights come on when I started the car?

That is a self-test of the bulbs and systems. The lights should go out within a few seconds; one that stays on is reporting a fault.

What does the exclamation mark in a tyre mean?

Low tyre pressure in at least one tyre, from the tyre pressure monitoring system. Check and inflate the tyres; if the light flashes at start, the system itself has a fault.

What is the light that looks like a coil?

On a diesel it is the glow plug light: wait until it goes out before starting the engine. If it flashes or comes on while driving, there is a fault.

What does the tortoise light mean?

In an electric or hybrid car it means reduced power, for example because the battery is nearly empty, too hot or too cold. Drive gently and charge soon.
