How it works
Our calendar repeats a fixed pattern. Every date falls on exactly one of seven weekdays, and the weekday moves forward by one for each day that passes. Counting the days between two dates and taking the remainder after dividing by 7 tells you how far the weekday shifts.
Take 14 October 2026. 1 January 2026 is a Thursday, and 14 October is day 287 of the year, so it is 286 days later. 286 divided by 7 leaves 6, and six days after Thursday is Wednesday. The same date next year moves one weekday forward, or two after a leap day.
The tool uses the Gregorian calendar, the one in everyday use, for every date from 1583. Countries switched to it at different times, so for very old dates the weekday in the records of the time can differ. Today means the date on your own device.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a date fall on a different weekday each year?
A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks and one day, so each date moves one weekday forward from year to year. In a leap year it moves two.
Is the week counted from Monday or Sunday?
The weekday names are the same everywhere. Only the start of the week differs. The ISO week shown here starts on Monday, as in Finland and most of Europe.
Can I check a date long ago?
Yes, any date from 1583 to 9999. The Gregorian calendar is applied to every date, even where a country still used an older calendar at the time.
Does the time zone change the weekday of an entered date?
No. An entered calendar date has no time zone. The device’s local date is used only when the field is empty.
What does day of the year mean?
It counts from 1 on 1 January, up to 365 in a common year or 366 in a leap year.
