How do you convert Fahrenheit to Celsius?

A 350 °F oven is about 177 °C, and 98.6 °F is 37 °C. Enter any temperature to convert it exactly.

Result

176.7 °C

350 degrees Fahrenheit is about 176.7 degrees Celsius

  • Formula: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
  • Water freezes at 32 °F = 0 °C.
  • In an oven, 176.7 °C is closest to gas mark 4.

How to use

  1. Type the temperature and pick its unit under From.
  2. Pick the unit you want under To; the swap button turns the conversion around.
  3. Read the result, or every unit at once in the list below it.
  4. Baking from a British recipe? The oven table shows each gas mark in °F and °C, and the insight names the gas mark nearest to your temperature.

How it works

Temperature scales differ in two ways: where they put zero and how big one degree is. A Celsius degree and a kelvin are the same size, but 0 °C is the freezing point of water while 0 K is absolute zero, the coldest anything can be, 273.15 degrees lower. A Fahrenheit degree is smaller, 5/9 of a Celsius degree, and its zero sits 32 degrees below freezing. Rankine uses Fahrenheit-sized degrees counted from absolute zero.

So converting needs a multiplication and a shift: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, and K = °C + 273.15. For example, 180 °C × 9/5 = 324, plus 32 is 356 °F. These relations are exact by definition (NIST Special Publication 811; the BIPM SI Brochure), so the only rounding is in how many digits are shown.

Gas marks are the settings of British gas ovens. Mark 1 is 275 °F and each mark adds 25 °F up to mark 10 at 500 °F; ¼ and ½ are 225 °F and 250 °F. Recipes round the Celsius values, so you may see gas mark 4 written as 180 °C although it is 177 °C.

This tool converts temperatures, not temperature differences: a rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F, without the 32. Values below absolute zero don't exist, so the tool refuses them.
