How it works

In Finland an employer can pay costs of a work trip in your own vehicle as a kilometre allowance (kilometrikorvaus), and the costs of being away as a per diem (päiväraha), without tax up to the amounts the Finnish Tax Administration sets for each year. This tool uses those Finnish rates; it does not apply elsewhere.

The kilometre allowance is kilometres × the rate per km. In 2026 a car earns 55 cents a kilometre, plus 4 cents for each passenger the employer requires you to carry and supplements such as 9 cents with a trailer.

A domestic per diem needs a trip to a work site more than 15 km away. A trip of over 6 hours earns a partial per diem and over 10 hours a full one; on longer trips each full 24 hours earns a full per diem and the hours past the last full day add more. Free meals halve it. The source is the Tax Administration's yearly decision on tax-free travel allowances. Per diems abroad, meal and night allowances are not covered.

Worked example

Frequently asked questions

Does my employer have to pay these amounts?

No. The decision sets the most that can be paid tax-free. Your contract or collective agreement decides what you actually get; anything above these amounts is taxable pay.

Can I deduct trips if my employer pays nothing?

Work travel costs can be deducted in your own taxation, but by other rules and amounts. This tool shows what an employer can pay tax-free.

How are long trips counted for the per diem?

Each full 24 hours from the start earns a full per diem. If the trip goes on at least 2 hours past the last full day you get a partial one more, and over 6 hours a full one more.

When do the rates change?

Once a year. The Tax Administration publishes the next year's decision near the end of the year, and the page shows which year's rates it uses.

Can I calculate foreign per diems?

No. The per diem calculation covers domestic trips in Finland only.
