Work out the fuel and the cost of a trip from distance, consumption and fuel price.

How to use

  1. Enter the trip distance and choose kilometres or miles.
  2. Enter the vehicle's fuel consumption and pick its scale: litres per 100 km, km per litre or miles per gallon.
  3. Enter the fuel price per litre or gallon. Add passengers to split the cost.

How it works

The fuel a trip needs is the distance times the vehicle's consumption, and the cost is that fuel times the price. The tool first converts every consumption scale to litres per 100 km, so km per litre, miles per US gallon and miles per UK gallon all give the same kind of answer.

With L litres per 100 km, a trip of D km needs D × L ÷ 100 litres. Miles per gallon is the other way round: litres per 100 km = 100 × gallon ÷ (mpg × mile). A US gallon is 3.785 411 784 litres, a UK (imperial) gallon 4.546 09 litres and a mile 1.609 344 km (NIST SP 811, appendix B.8). For example, 300 km at 6.5 L/100 km needs 19.5 litres, which costs €35.10 at €1.80 per litre.

Real consumption changes with speed, load, weather, traffic and driving style, so use a figure from your own trips. Tolls, parking and wear are not included. The cost is counted in the currency's smallest unit and shared evenly, the leftover units going to different people so the shares add up.

Frequently asked questions

Why are US and UK miles per gallon different?

A UK (imperial) gallon is about 20 % larger than a US gallon, so the same car shows a higher mpg on the UK scale. Pick the scale your figure was measured in.

Which consumption scale should I pick?

The one your figure is in. The tool converts it to litres per 100 km behind the scenes, so the same car gives the same answer on any scale. Changing the scale does not change the number you typed.

Is it a round trip?

The distance is used as entered. For a return journey, enter the total distance there and back.

Does the tool convert currencies?

No. Prices and the result are in the currency you choose.

Does the cost include tolls or parking?

No. It covers fuel only; add tolls, parking and other expenses separately.
