How it works

Typing speed is counted in words per minute, but a "word" here is five characters, spaces and punctuation included. That way long and short words weigh the same. Gross speed is the characters you typed, divided by five, divided by the minutes you took.

Mistakes cost speed. Net speed is the gross speed minus one word-per-minute for every wrong character still in the text per minute, and never below zero. For example, 150 characters in 30 seconds is 60 WPM gross; with 5 wrong characters left, net speed is 60 − 10 = 50 WPM. Accuracy counts every key you pressed, including ones you fixed afterwards.

The text is made of the most common words of the language, picked at random, so it feels like everyday writing rather than a quote. It runs only in your browser, and nothing you type is sent or saved. Speed on a phone screen is normally lower than on a keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?

Most people type somewhere between 30 and 50 words per minute: a study of copying text on a keyboard (Karat et al., CHI 1999) measured about 33 on average. Anything above that is quick. Accuracy matters as much as speed, because fast typing full of mistakes saves no time.

Why is my net speed lower than my gross speed?

Net speed subtracts the wrong characters still in the text when the test ends. Correcting a mistake with Backspace removes its penalty, but the time spent doing so still counts.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It reads what the keyboard enters, so touch keyboards work too. Turn off auto-correct if your keyboard keeps changing words for you.

How do words per minute relate to keystrokes per minute?

One word is counted as five characters, so 40 WPM is 200 keystrokes a minute. Trained ten-finger typists reach 200 to 400.

Does using Backspace erase an accuracy mistake?

No. Accuracy counts incorrect characters even if you later delete them. Fixing them can still improve net speed.
