How it works

WHOIS asks a domain registry or registrar for registration information. The response may include the company managing the registration, its dates, status codes and name servers. It does not test whether the website works.

Dates are shown in UTC. For example, an expiry timestamp of 2030-01-15T00:00:00Z appears as 15 January 2030. An expiry date is a registry record, not a promise that the domain becomes available that day.

WHOIS responses vary and may be incomplete. Many registries now use RDAP, so an empty result is not proof that a domain is free. Contact details and raw responses are not shown. Sources: RFC 3912 and ICANN’s RDAP overview.

Frequently asked questions

Does an unconfirmed registration mean I can buy the domain?

No. The service may not support WHOIS or may omit recognizable registration fields. Check with an accredited registrar.

Why are some dates missing?

The registry may omit them or return an unsupported date format. Unknown dates are left out rather than guessed.

Does the expiry date tell me when a website will stop working?

No. Registration renewal and website hosting are separate. This tool checks registration records, not website availability.

Why is the owner’s contact information missing?

This tool does not display contact information. It shows registration facts such as the registrar and dates when available.

Should I enter a full website address?

Enter the registered domain only, without https:// or a page path. A subdomain may not have its own registration record.
