How it works

Dice notation is the shorthand tabletop games use. NdS means roll N dice with S sides each and add them up, so 3d6 is three six-sided dice and d20 is one twenty-sided die. A plus or minus adds or subtracts more dice or a fixed number: 2d6+3 is two six-sided dice plus three.

A suffix can drop dice before adding. 4d6dl rolls four dice and drops the lowest one, the classic way to roll a character ability score. dh drops the highest, and a number after dl or dh drops several: 4d6dh1dl1 drops both ends.

Every side of every die is equally likely, and each die is independent of the others, so 2d6 gives 7 more often than 2 or 12 only because more die pairs add up to 7: six pairs against one. The random numbers come from your device's secure generator. The notation follows the common convention described on Wikipedia's Dice notation page.

The tool understands plain notation only. It does not do keep rules, exploding dice or rerolls, and it allows up to 10 terms, 100 dice per term and 1000 sides.

Frequently asked questions

Are the rolls fair?

Yes. Each side comes up with the same chance, and a roll never depends on the roll before it. A long streak of the same number is rare but not impossible.

What does 4d6dl mean?

Roll four six-sided dice and ignore the lowest one before adding the rest. It gives higher totals than 3d6, and the dropped die is shown in brackets.

Is the roll saved or shared?

No. Recent rolls stay on the page until you leave it. A shared link carries only the notation, never a result.

Can I add a fixed bonus to a roll?

Yes. For example, 1d20+5 rolls a twenty-sided die and adds five.

Can I use exploding dice or rerolls?

No. Those rules are not supported; roll again manually if your game calls for another roll.
