ISO 3166 alpha-2, alpha-3 and numeric codes, calling codes and domains of 249 countries and territories.

How to use

  1. Type a country’s name in English or Finnish, or any code you have: FI, FIN, 246, +358 or .fi.
  2. Narrow the list to one continent if you like, and switch between codes, dialling and aircraft marks.
  3. Select a row to see all its codes, and copy the one you need. In the aircraft view, type a whole registration such as OH-LWA to see where it is registered.

How it works

Every country and many territories have three codes in the international standard ISO 3166-1: two letters (FI), three letters (FIN) and three digits (246). Forms, passports, shipping labels and software use them so that a country never depends on its name in one language. The digits are the same as the United Nations’ M49 codes, so they also work where the Latin alphabet doesn’t.

Telephone calling codes come from a different standard, ITU-T E.164, and don’t follow countries one to one: +1 is shared by the United States, Canada and much of the Caribbean, which are told apart by a three-digit area code (+1 684 is American Samoa), and +44 covers the United Kingdom and the Crown Dependencies. To call Finland from abroad you dial the exit prefix of the country you are in (00 in most of Europe, 011 from North America), then 358, then the number without its trunk prefix: 040 123 4567 becomes +358 40 123 4567.

Internet country domains mostly reuse the two-letter code (.fi, .de), with one well-known exception: the United Kingdom is GB in ISO 3166 but uses .uk. The codes change rarely, when a country is created or renamed; dialling rules change more often. The sources and the date we last checked them are listed under the table.

Aircraft carry yet another code. Under ICAO Annex 7 every registration begins with the nationality mark of the state of registry, taken from that country’s ITU radio call sign series: OH- for Finland, G- for the United Kingdom, D- for Germany, and N for the United States, which writes no hyphen. The longest mark that fits wins, so B-HNR is Hong Kong while plain B- is shared by China and Taiwan. The mark tells you the register, not the owner or where the aircraft flies.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between alpha-2 and alpha-3 codes?

Both name the same country. Alpha-2 (FI) is the most common, used in domains, currencies and software; alpha-3 (FIN) is easier to recognise and is used in passports and by many international organisations.

Why is the United Kingdom GB but its websites end in .uk?

The ISO code GB comes from Great Britain. The .uk domain was created before the internet adopted ISO 3166 for country domains and was kept; UK is reserved in ISO 3166 so that it never goes to another country.

Why does the exit prefix say “depends on the operator”?

In some countries, such as Brazil, Colombia and South Korea, you choose an operator by the international prefix you dial. Those countries have no single prefix; the plus sign (+) on a mobile phone always works.

Is Kosovo listed?

No. Kosovo has no code in ISO 3166-1; the XK code some organisations use is a user-assigned code outside the standard, so this table doesn’t list it.

Which country has the code +44?

The United Kingdom, together with Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man. Type any calling code in the search to see who uses it.

How do I call the United States from the UK?

Dial 00, then 1, then the ten-digit number: 00 1 212 555 0123. On a mobile phone, + works in place of 00.

What is Finland's country code?

+358 for calls, FI and FIN in ISO 3166-1 (numeric 246), and .fi for websites.

What is the difference between a country code and an area code?

The country code chooses the country; the area code chooses a region or network inside it. Calling from abroad, you leave out the leading 0 of the area code.
