Find the aspect ratio of a width and height, or resize a picture or video to a new width or height without stretching it.

How to use

  1. Enter the width and height of your picture, video or screen, in any unit.
  2. Read the aspect ratio, or switch to Resize, say whether you know the new width or height, and enter it.
  3. Pick a common ratio such as 16:9 or 4:3 to set the height for the current width.

How it works

The aspect ratio of a picture or screen is its width compared with its height, written width : height. 1920 × 1080 is 16 : 9: for every 16 units across there are 9 up. Both numbers are divided by their greatest common divisor to give the smallest whole numbers, so any unit works, pixels or centimetres.

To resize without stretching, keep the ratio. If the new width is W, the new height is H × W ÷ w, where w and H are the original width and height. A 1920 × 1080 picture shrunk to 1280 wide is 1080 × 1280 ÷ 1920 = 720 high. Common ratios, such as 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 and 21:9, are listed in Wikipedia’s “Aspect ratio (image)”.

Many real sizes are only close to a common ratio: 1366 × 768 is 683 : 384, which is nearly 16 : 9. The tool names the closest common ratio and shows whether the shape is landscape, portrait or square.

Worked example

How tall is a 1,920 × 1,080 image when resized to 1,280 pixels wide?

  1. Height = 1,080 × 1,280 ÷ 1,920 = 720.

The new size is 1,280 × 720 pixels.

Frequently asked questions

What is the aspect ratio of 1920 × 1080?

16:9. Both numbers divide by 120, which leaves 16 and 9.

How do I resize an image without distorting it?

Keep the aspect ratio: multiply the other side by the new size and divide by the old size. Or use Resize here and enter the new width or height.

Why is my ratio not a tidy number like 16:9?

The size may be a little off the standard shape, as with 1366 × 768. The tool shows the exact ratio and the closest common one.

Does the unit matter?

No. A ratio only compares the two numbers, so pixels, millimetres and inches give the same answer.

Is 16:9 the same shape as 9:16?

No. Aspect ratios are width to height: 16:9 is landscape and 9:16 is portrait. Swapping the numbers turns the frame sideways.
