The keyboard listens while it has focus. Tab leaves the test area. Scroll sideways to see all keys. Browser and system shortcuts still work.

How it works

Each physical key has a position code. The key value is the character or action that your current language and modifiers produce. For example, the same KeyA position can produce a or A. The reference labels show codes, not the letters printed on every keyboard.

Coverage counts distinct tested positions in the selected layout. Testing 52 of the 104 ANSI positions gives 50%. ISO adds the IntlBackslash position beside the left Shift key. A tested marker means the browser received a press, not that the hardware passed every possible test.

The page keeps only the last event and the tested positions in memory. Reset or closing the page clears them. System shortcuts, Fn keys and keys intercepted by the browser may not reach the page; some laptops lack positions in these full-size layouts.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a key not light up?

Click the on-screen keyboard first. Your operating system or browser may reserve that key or shortcut. This test cannot distinguish an intercepted press from a hardware fault.

Why is a key still marked as pressed?

The browser may miss a release when a system shortcut takes over. Leave the test area or choose Reset to clear held keys.

Does this record what I type?

No text history is kept. Only the latest event and the set of tested physical positions remain in page memory; they are not stored or transmitted.

Does a score below 100% mean my keyboard is broken?

No. The reference includes keys that many laptops and compact keyboards do not have. The score counts positions received by the browser, not hardware health.

Can I test several keys at once?

Yes. Hold a combination in the test area and see which positions light up. A missing key may be a keyboard limitation or a shortcut intercepted by the system.
