How to use

  1. Choose an image from your device, or drop it on the box. It is not uploaded.
  2. Pick the file type to convert to. For a lossy type, set the quality.
  3. Check the preview, then download the converted image.

How it works

A file type is a way of storing the same pixels. PNG stores them exactly, so files are larger but nothing is lost. JPEG, WebP and AVIF are lossy: they drop fine detail the eye hardly notices to make the file much smaller. Your browser reads the picture and saves it again in the type you choose, on your own device.

Transparency is the one thing that does not always carry over. PNG, WebP and AVIF keep it, but JPEG has no transparent pixels, so the see-through areas are filled with a background colour, white unless you pick another. Converting between lossy types, or saving a JPEG again, loses a little quality each time, so keep the original.

WebP and AVIF usually give a smaller file than JPEG at the same look, but not every browser can write them, so the list only shows the types yours can. Moving pictures such as animated GIFs become a single still image.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded?

No. The image is opened and converted in your browser and never leaves your device.

Why did my transparent PNG get a white background?

JPEG cannot store transparency, so the see-through areas are painted with a colour. Choose PNG, WebP or AVIF to keep them, or pick another background colour.

Which type should I choose?

JPEG is accepted almost everywhere. WebP is a good modern choice for the web, AVIF can be smaller still, and PNG suits screenshots, logos and anything with sharp edges.

Why is AVIF or WebP missing from the list?

Browsers differ in which types they can write. Only the types your browser can save are offered.

Will an animated image stay animated?

No. The converted file contains one still image, not the animation.
