How it works
Your public IP is the return address the internet uses for this connection. IPv4 addresses have four dotted numbers; IPv6 addresses use groups of hexadecimal digits. This page observes one connection, so it cannot prove whether your network also supports the other version.
IP location is an estimate based on address ranges allocated to networks. It is not GPS and cannot locate a home or a person. DB-IP Lite supplies approximate places and autonomous system numbers (ASNs); an ASN identifies a network, not necessarily your retail provider. Missing details are left unknown.
A VPN typically shows its exit server. Mobile networks and carrier-grade NAT can share a public address across many customers, and IPv6 privacy addresses can change. The address and lookup result are used only to answer you, in memory, without logging, storage or caching.
Worked example
What can an address tell you?
- 192.0.2.1 is an example of IPv4 notation.
- 2001:db8::1 is an example of IPv6 notation.
- Both are reserved documentation addresses, not live connections or locations.
The notation identifies the address family. It does not reveal a person’s exact position.
Frequently asked questions
Is this my public or private IP address?
It is the public address used to reach this site. Your device may also have a private address inside your home or office network.
Why is the location in another city?
The database may locate your provider’s network or VPN exit instead of you. IP geolocation is approximate and can also be out of date.
Does IPv4 mean my connection has no IPv6?
No. Your browser used IPv4 for this request, but your network may support both. This page does not test a separate IPv6-only destination.
Why does my IP change?
Switching networks, reconnecting, using a VPN or rotating an IPv6 privacy address can change it. A provider can also reassign public addresses.
Can I look up someone else’s IP?
No. This tool shows only the address of your own connection and has no address search.
Is my IP address saved or sent to DB-IP?
No. The lookup runs on our server using an offline database. We do not log, store or cache your address or lookup result, and no lookup request goes to DB-IP.
