How to use

  1. Read the next public holiday and the days left to it at the top.
  2. Change the year to see the holidays of any year from 1992.
  3. Choose Flag days to list the official flag days instead.

How it works

Finland has thirteen public holidays. Some fall on the same date every year, such as New Year's Day, Epiphany, May Day, Independence Day and Christmas. The others move: Easter and the days tied to it (Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day and Whit Sunday) change every year, and Midsummer Day and All Saints' Day are always on a Saturday. Midsummer Eve and Christmas Eve are not statutory holidays, but most workplaces are closed, so they are listed as customary days off.

Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March. In 2026 that is 5 April, so Good Friday is 3 April, Easter Monday 6 April, Ascension Day 14 May and Whit Sunday 24 May. Midsummer Day is the Saturday from 20 to 26 June and All Saints' Day the Saturday from 31 October to 6 November.

Official flag days are a separate list: seven days that fall on a fixed rule every year, such as 6 December and Mother's Day on the second Sunday of May. Election days and the day a president takes office are also flag days, but they depend on events, so they are not listed. The holiday rules shown here apply from 1992.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Easter and Midsummer change dates?

Easter follows the moon: it is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March. Midsummer Day is tied to a weekday rather than a date, the Saturday between 20 and 26 June.

Is Christmas Eve a public holiday in Finland?

Not by law, but in practice it is a day off almost everywhere, as is Midsummer Eve. The list shows them as customary days off, so you can tell them apart from statutory holidays.

When is the flag flown in Finland?

On the official flag days, for example Independence Day on 6 December, and on other days by custom. Choose Flag days above to see the official ones for any year.

Are school holidays included?

No. School holidays and local closures are not part of this list.

Does the flag-day list include election days?

No. It lists annually recurring official flag days; election days and presidential inaugurations are not included.
