How it works

Many countries move their clocks one hour forward in spring and back again in autumn, so that evenings stay light for longer in summer. This is called daylight saving time or summer time. Each region has its own rules for the dates and the hour of the change, and many places, most of Asia and Africa for example, never change their clocks.

In the European Union every change happens at the same moment, 01:00 UTC on the last Sunday of March and of October. In Finland the clocks therefore go from 03:00 to 04:00 in spring and from 04:00 back to 03:00 in autumn. In the United States the clocks change at 02:00 local time on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, so the gap between Europe and America is an hour smaller for a few weeks. Sources: EU Directive 2000/84/EC, US Code 15 U.S.C. §260a and the IANA time zone database.

The dates come from the IANA time zone database built into your browser. Future changes follow the rules in force today; if a government changes them, the dates shown change once browsers update their data.

Frequently asked questions

Do the clocks go forward or back in spring?

Forward. Remember "spring forward, fall back": in spring you lose an hour of sleep, in autumn you get it back.

Is the EU going to stop changing the clocks?

The European Parliament voted in 2019 to end the changes, but the member states have not agreed, so the clocks still change twice a year.

Why is it different in Australia?

South of the equator summer is in December and January, so the clocks go forward in October and back in April. Some states, such as Queensland, do not change them at all.

Does my phone change its clock by itself?

Yes, phones and computers set to update the time automatically switch at the exact moment. Clocks on ovens, cars and walls need to be changed by hand.

Are clock changes always one hour?

No. The tool shows the actual change; Lord Howe Island, for example, changes by 30 minutes.
