How it works

Shares describe how the bill is divided relative to each other. A person with share 2 pays twice as much as a person with share 1, and equal shares split the bill evenly. Each person's part is their share divided by the sum of all shares, the same part-of-a-whole idea as a percentage (OpenStax Prealgebra 2e, section 6.1).

For a bill T and shares w₁ … wₙ adding up to W, person i pays T × wᵢ / W.

Money cannot always be divided exactly. The bill is counted in the currency's smallest unit, such as the cent, and everyone's share is first rounded down. The few units left over go one each to the shares that lost the most in rounding. So €100 split three ways is €33.34, €33.33 and €33.33, and the shares always add up to the bill. Tips, taxes and cash rounding are not included.

Worked example

How is €100.00 split in shares of 1, 1 and 2?

  1. 1 + 1 + 2 = 4.
  2. €100.00 ÷ 4 = €25.00; €25.00 × 2 = €50.00.

€25.00 + €25.00 + €50.00 = €100.00.

Frequently asked questions

Can shares be unequal?

Yes. Give someone share 2 and they pay twice as much as someone with share 1. Any whole numbers from 1 to 1000 work.

Why does one person pay a cent more?

When the bill does not divide evenly, the leftover cents go to the people whose exact share was cut the most, earlier rows first on a tie. That keeps the total right.

Can I split a bill in yen?

Yes. Choose any currency; the split uses its smallest unit, so yen are split into whole yen. Changing the currency never converts the amount.

Are tips included?

No. Add a tip to the bill total first if you want it shared the same way.

What is saved in a shared link?

Only the bill, the currency and the list of shares. People are numbered, never named, and nothing is stored on a server.
