How it works
A tip is a percentage of the bill added on top. Tipping customs differ between countries, venues and situations, and some bills already include a service charge. This tool does not assume any custom: you choose the percentage.
For a bill B and a tip of p percent, the tip is B × p ÷ 100 and the total is B + tip (a part of a whole as a percentage, OpenStax Prealgebra 2e, section 6.1).
Money is counted in the currency's smallest unit, such as the cent. The tip is rounded to the nearest unit, and when the total does not divide evenly, the few leftover units go one each to different people, so the shares always add up to the total. Taxes and cash rounding are not included.
Worked example
What does each of 3 people pay on a €60.00 bill with a 10% tip?
- €60.00 × 10 ÷ 100 = €6.00.
- (€60.00 + €6.00) ÷ 3 = €22.00.

How much should I tip?
That depends on the country, the place and your own view, and some bills already include service. The quick picks are only round numbers, not a recommendation.
Is the tip calculated before or after tax?
On whatever amount you enter as the bill. Enter the amount you want the percentage applied to.
Why does one person pay a cent more?
When the total does not divide evenly, the leftover cents are handed out one by one so that the shares add up exactly to the total.
Can I use a different currency?
Yes. Choose any currency; the tool uses its smallest unit. It never converts between currencies.
Can I split the total unequally?
