How to use

  1. Choose the direction: old money into euros, or euros into old money.
  2. Pick the currency and type the amount. For the Finnish markka, also give the year the money is from.
  3. Read the fixed conversion at the top. For the markka, the amount in today's money and the rise in prices are shown under it.

Before 1963 the amount is 1,000 old marks (10 new marks). Today's euros use the latest full year of Statistics Finland's index.

How it works

When a country adopted the euro, its old currency got a fixed rate that never changes: €1 = 5.94573 Finnish markka, 1.95583 Deutsche Mark, 6.55957 French francs or 1,936.27 Italian lire (European Central Bank). This only swaps one unit for another. It does not tell what the money was worth, because prices have risen a lot since.

In today's money accounts for that rise, for the markka only. Like Statistics Finland's value of money converter, it uses the cost-of-living index I (CC BY 4.0): today's euros = amount × I(latest full year) ÷ I(year) ÷ 5.94573, and a further ÷ 100 before 1963, when 100 old marks became one new mark. The index follows an average household's spending, so single things such as homes or electronics moved differently, and figures before 1921 are unofficial estimates.

Worked example

What are 1,000 markka of 1985 worth in today's euros?

  1. At the fixed rate: 1,000 ÷ 5.94573 = €168.19.
  2. Prices rose from index 118,737 in 1985 to 283,504 in 2025, a factor of 2.3877.
  3. €168.19 × 2.3877 = €401.58.

€401.58 in euros of 2025, against €168.19 at the fixed rate.

Frequently asked questions

What does mummonmarkka mean?

Grandma's markka: the Finnish nickname for counting euro prices back in markka. Many Finns still do it in their heads, multiplying by about six.

Is multiplying by six close enough?

Almost: the exact rate is 5.94573, so a ten-euro coffee is 59.46 markka, not 60. For large sums the difference grows: €10,000 is 59,457 markka, not 60,000.

Was a markka in the 1990s worth more than its fixed rate?

Yes. Prices have risen since, so a markka of 1995 bought more than the 17 cents the fixed rate gives. Choose Old money → euros and the year to see how much it is in today's euros.
