How it works

The displayed place is an estimate from DB-IP Lite address ranges. It can describe the provider’s network or VPN exit. It is not your device’s location and cannot identify a home.

IP location is an estimate based on address ranges allocated to networks. It is not GPS and cannot locate a home or a person. DB-IP Lite supplies approximate places and autonomous system numbers (ASNs); an ASN identifies a network, not necessarily your retail provider. Missing details are left unknown.

Worked example

What can an address tell you?

  1. 192.0.2.1 is an example of IPv4 notation.
  2. 2001:db8::1 is an example of IPv6 notation.
  3. Both are reserved documentation addresses, not live connections or locations.

The notation identifies the address family. It does not reveal a person’s exact position.

Frequently asked questions

Does this use my device’s GPS?

No. This page does not request device location. It estimates a place from the public address used for this connection.

How often does the location data change?

DB-IP Lite publishes monthly data. Our packaged copy changes when we refresh and deploy it, so a recent network move may not appear yet.

Why is the accuracy radius not provided?

The Lite database may not supply a radius. Unknown is not zero, and the coordinates are still only approximate.

Why is the time zone not provided?

A time zone is shown only if the database provides one. We do not infer it from the approximate coordinates.

Can different people get the same location?

Yes. Many addresses can map to one network location, and several people can share a public address. The estimate does not identify a person.
