How it works
The name belongs to the autonomous system associated with your public IP in DB-IP Lite. It can be a network operator, hosting company or VPN provider rather than the company on your internet bill.
IP location is an estimate based on address ranges allocated to networks. It is not GPS and cannot locate a home or a person. DB-IP Lite supplies approximate places and autonomous system numbers (ASNs); an ASN identifies a network, not necessarily your retail provider. Missing details are left unknown.
Worked example
What can an address tell you?
- 192.0.2.1 is an example of IPv4 notation.
- 2001:db8::1 is an example of IPv6 notation.
- Both are reserved documentation addresses, not live connections or locations.
The notation identifies the address family. It does not reveal a person’s exact position.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the company I pay for internet?
Not always. Resellers can use another operator’s network, and VPNs show the network carrying their exit connection.
What does the ASN identify?
An autonomous system number identifies a network that exchanges internet routes. It identifies the network, not you or your subscription.
Why is the network organisation missing?
The offline database may have no ASN record for this address. We show an unknown value instead of guessing a provider.
Will a VPN show my home provider?
Usually it shows the network at the VPN exit. That is the address our server sees, rather than your home connection.
Does the ASN reveal my internet plan or speed?
No. The network record contains no subscription, price or speed-test result.
