How to use
- Choose the country you are visiting.
- Choose restaurant, taxi or hotel.
- Enter the bill or fare in the local currency to see the tip and the total.
How it works
Tipping customs differ a lot: in Japan a tip is not expected at all, in Finland service is already in the price, and in Germany or France a few percent on top is usual. The tool shows what each country's official tourism board or government page says about restaurants, taxis and hotels, and works out the tip on your bill. Countries whose official pages say nothing about tipping are left out rather than guessed.
A percentage tip is the bill × the percentage ÷ 100, rounded to the currency's smallest unit: 10 % of a €47.30 bill is €4.73, for a total of €52.03. Where the custom is to round up, the bill goes up to the next round amount: the next whole euro or pound below 100, the next ten below 1,000, and so on (€47.30 becomes €48). Hotel tips are fixed amounts per bag or per day, in the local currency.
These are customs, not rules: a tip is always your choice, and a service charge already on the bill usually replaces it. Germany's figures come from Berlin's official page, and South Africa's page dates from 2018. Each answer links to its page, which is re-checked once a year.

Frequently asked questions
Do you tip in Finland?
Visit Finland says tipping is not expected and service is always in the price. Rounding up or leaving a couple of euros for great service is welcome.
How much do you tip in France?
Restaurant prices already include a 15 % service charge; France's tourism site suggests another 2–3 % for good service, 10–15 % of a taxi fare, and €1.50 a bag for a hotel porter.
Why is the United States missing?
We list a country only when its official tourism board or government page states the custom and we can recheck that page every year. We found no such page for the United States, so we leave it out rather than guess.
Which currency is the bill in?
In the country's own currency, the one you pay with there. The tool never converts currencies; hotel tips are in the amounts the official page gives.
Does a blank service mean no tip is expected?
No. It means the cited source does not describe that service. Ask locally rather than treating missing information as a zero tip.
