How it works

Every currency has a three-letter code from the international standard ISO 4217, used by banks, payment cards, exchange rates and price lists. Most codes are the country's two-letter ISO 3166 code plus the first letter of the currency's name: JPY is Japan's yen and SEK Sweden's krona. The euro, shared by many countries, has its own code EUR. Each currency also has a three-digit numeric code (the euro is 978) for systems that cannot use letters.

Currencies differ in how many decimals they use. The euro and the dollar have 2 (cents), the Japanese yen and the Korean won have none, and the Kuwaiti and Bahraini dinars have 3. In some countries cash is rounded more than card payments: Swedish prices go to whole kronor in cash. The example amount on the page shows how 1,234.50 is written in the selected currency and your language.

The list follows the Unicode CLDR data that browsers and operating systems use, which tracks ISO 4217 and the currencies each country uses today. Names and symbols come from your browser in your language. Funds codes, precious metals and currencies no longer in use, such as the Finnish markka, are not listed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the currency code of the euro?

EUR, with the numeric code 978. It is legal tender in the euro area countries and in a few others such as Andorra, Monaco and Montenegro.

Why does the US dollar have the code USD?

Most ISO 4217 codes are the country code (US) plus the first letter of the currency's name (D for dollar). The same rule gives GBP for the British pound and CHF for the Swiss franc (Confoederatio Helvetica, franc).

Which currencies have no decimals?

Among others the Japanese yen (JPY), the South Korean won (KRW), the Icelandic króna (ISK) and the Chilean peso (CLP). Pick 'No decimals' to list them all.

What is the difference between a currency code and a currency symbol?

The code (USD) is unique and the same in every language. A symbol ($) can be shared by many currencies and is written differently in different languages, so prices for an international audience are clearer with the code.

Is Bitcoin in the list?

No. ISO 4217 covers currencies issued by states and central banks; cryptocurrencies have no ISO code.

Which currency does Bulgaria use?

The euro, since 1 January 2026. The Bulgarian lev (BGN) is no longer legal tender and is not listed.
