How to use

  1. Choose the direction: old money into euros, or euros into old money.
  2. Pick the currency and type the amount. For the Finnish markka, also give the year the money is from.
  3. Read the fixed conversion at the top. For the markka, the amount in today's money and the rise in prices are shown under it.

Before 1963 the amount is 1,000 old marks (10 new marks). Today's euros use the latest full year of Statistics Finland's index.

How it works

When a country adopted the euro, its old currency got a fixed rate that never changes: €1 = 5.94573 Finnish markka, 1.95583 Deutsche Mark, 6.55957 French francs or 1,936.27 Italian lire (European Central Bank). This only swaps one unit for another. It does not tell what the money was worth, because prices have risen a lot since.

In today's money accounts for that rise, for the markka only. Like Statistics Finland's value of money converter, it uses the cost-of-living index I (CC BY 4.0): today's euros = amount × I(latest full year) ÷ I(year) ÷ 5.94573, and a further ÷ 100 before 1963, when 100 old marks became one new mark. The index follows an average household's spending, so single things such as homes or electronics moved differently, and figures before 1921 are unofficial estimates.

Worked example

What are 1,000 markka of 1985 worth in today's euros?

  1. At the fixed rate: 1,000 ÷ 5.94573 = €168.19.
  2. Prices rose from index 118,737 in 1985 to 283,504 in 2025, a factor of 2.3877.
  3. €168.19 × 2.3877 = €401.58.

€401.58 in euros of 2025, against €168.19 at the fixed rate.

Frequently asked questions

How many markka is one euro?

€1 = 5.94573 markka, fixed when Finland adopted the euro. Euro cash replaced the markka at the start of 2002.

Why are the two answers different?

The fixed conversion only changes the unit. In today's money also counts how much prices have risen since that year, so it tells what the money would buy now.

What are old marks?

Marks from before the 1963 currency reform, which removed two zeros: 100 old marks became 1 new mark. Give the year and the calculator counts amounts before 1963 in old marks.

How much is a Deutsche Mark in euros?

€1 = 1.95583 Deutsche Mark, so 1 DM is about 51 cents. Pick DEM as the currency; an adjustment for German prices is not available yet.

Which currencies are included?

All 21 currencies replaced by the euro, from the 1999 founders to the Croatian kuna (2023) and the Bulgarian lev (2026), each at the fixed rate published by the European Central Bank.
