How to use

  1. Press Start and allow the camera when the browser asks.
  2. Check the live picture. Move in front of the camera and see that the picture follows.
  3. Read the picture size and frame rate in the result. If you have more than one camera, pick another in the Camera list; to try a bigger picture, change the picture size to ask for.
  4. Press Save snapshot if you want a still picture. It is saved to your device only when you press the button.

How it works

A webcam sends a stream of still pictures, called frames. The picture size is how many dots wide and tall each frame is, and the frame rate is how many frames arrive each second. A bigger size gives more detail, and a higher frame rate makes movement smoother. Calls usually use 30 frames per second.

Sizes are named by their height: 720 dots tall is HD, 1080 is Full HD and 2160 is 4K. The size is the one your browser receives, which can be lower than the camera's best, for example when another app already uses the camera. The frame rate is measured from the frames that really arrive, so it can dip in poor light.

The picture is shown only on your device. Nothing is recorded or sent, and the camera stops when you press Stop or leave the page. The mirror switch only changes how the preview is drawn, like looking in a mirror.

Frequently asked questions

Is my camera recorded or uploaded?

No. The picture stays in this page and is never recorded or sent. A snapshot is saved only when you press the button, and only to your own device.

The picture is black. What now?

Remove the lens cover or privacy shutter, check the light, and close other apps that use the camera, such as a video call. Then press Stop and Start again.

Why is the size lower than my camera's specification?

The browser may pick a smaller size to save power or because the connection is slow. The size shown is what the browser really gets.

Can I choose another camera?

Yes. Once the camera runs, a Camera list shows every camera the browser knows, and you can pick one. The Switch camera button under the picture steps through them.

Does mirroring change what other apps see?

No. The mirror switch changes this page’s preview and saved snapshot. It does not change the camera settings in a video-call app.
