How to use

  1. Choose an event, or choose A date and time and enter the date and, if you like, the time.
  2. Pick a time zone if the moment happens somewhere else, such as a launch in New York. Otherwise your device's time zone is used.
  3. Open full screen for a big display, and turn on Beep at zero for a short sound while the page stays visible.
  4. Copy the link to share the countdown. A name you give it goes into the link only if you choose so.

How it works

A countdown subtracts now from the moment you are waiting for. The time left is split into whole days, hours, minutes and seconds: a day is 86,400 seconds, an hour 3,600 and a minute 60. When the moment has passed, the same numbers count the time since it.

Example: from 31 December at 18:30:00 to New Year at 00:00 is 5 hours 30 minutes, which is 19,800 seconds, so the display reads 00:05:30:00. The local time of the target is turned into an exact moment with the time-zone rules of the IANA Time Zone Database, which your browser carries, so daylight saving time is taken into account.

New Year, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day start at local midnight on 1 January, 24 December and 25 December. Midsummer Eve is the Friday before Midsummer Day, which in Finland and Sweden is the Saturday between 20 and 26 June. An event stays on screen during its own day and then moves to next year's.

The countdown uses your device's clock, so a wrong clock gives a wrong countdown. The beep plays only while the page is open and visible; it is not an alarm.
