How it works

A discount takes a percentage off the original price. A 25% discount removes one quarter, so you pay the remaining three quarters.

For an original price P and discount d in percent, the saving is P × d / 100 and the sale price is P × (1 − d / 100). For example, 25% off €100 saves €25 and leaves €75 to pay. This is the percentage method in OpenStax, Contemporary Mathematics, section 6.2.

The saving is rounded to the currency’s smallest unit, with a half unit rounded up. Subtracting that saving from the original price keeps the two amounts consistent. Currency decimal places follow ECMA-402 CurrencyDigits. Taxes, additional coupons and retailers’ cash-rounding rules are not included.

Frequently asked questions

What does 25% off mean?

You save 25 out of every 100 of the original price and pay the remaining 75.

How much do I save?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100. The calculator shows that saving in your chosen currency.

Are taxes included?

No tax is added or removed. The discount applies only to the price you enter.

Can discounts be added together?

Usually not. Two successive discounts apply to different prices. This tool calculates one discount only.

Why did half a cent round up?

This calculator rounds the saving half up to the smallest currency unit, then subtracts it from the original price. A retailer may use another rounding rule.

Does changing currency convert the price?

No. It changes the denomination and decimal places. Use the currency converter for exchange rates.
