Mean, median, mode and range of a list of numbers, with the count, sum, smallest and largest.
How to use
- Type or paste your numbers, separated by spaces, line breaks or semicolons.
- Read the mean as the answer, with the median, mode and range below it.
- Check the list of left-out entries if something is missing, and copy a value or the link to share the list.
How it works
The mean is what most people mean by the average: add the numbers up and divide by how many there are. The median is the middle number once the list is sorted, or the mean of the two middle numbers when the count is even. The mode is the value that appears most often, and the range is the largest number minus the smallest.
For 3, 5, 5, 7 and 10 the sum is 30 and there are 5 numbers, so the mean is 30 ÷ 5 = 6. Sorted, the middle number is 5, which is also the mode because it appears twice. The range is 10 − 3 = 7. Formulas follow Wikipedia’s articles on the arithmetic mean, median, mode and range.
The three averages answer different questions. One very large number pulls the mean up but barely moves the median, which is why incomes and house prices are usually quoted as medians. A list can have several modes, or none when no value repeats. Entries that are not numbers are left out and listed so you can fix them.
Worked example
What is the mean of 2, 4 and 9?
- Sum: 2 + 4 + 9 = 15.
Mean: 15 ÷ 3 = 5.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count, the median is the middle value of the sorted list, and the mode is the most frequent value.
Which average should I use?
Use the mean when values are fairly even, and the median when a few very large or small values would distort it, such as salaries.
Can a list have more than one mode?
Yes. If two values appear equally often and more than any other, both are modes. If no value repeats, there is no mode.
How do I enter decimals?
Use the decimal mark of the page language: 2.5 in English, 2,5 in Finnish. Separate numbers with spaces, line breaks or semicolons.
Does a zero count in the average?
Yes. Zero is a value and counts in the divisor. Leave out a missing observation instead of entering zero for it.
