How to use

  1. Type a time as hours and minutes, such as 7:30, to see it in decimal hours.
  2. Type decimal hours, such as 7.75, to see them as hours and minutes.
  3. For a timesheet, put each day's hours on its own line; the total appears in both forms.
  4. Choose how many decimal places your payroll or invoice uses.

How it works

Payroll, invoicing and project tools often want hours as one decimal number, so that they can be multiplied by an hourly rate. An hour has 60 minutes, not 100, so 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours, not 7.3.

To turn minutes into a decimal, divide them by 60: decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60. For example, 7:45 is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. The other way, multiply the decimal part by 60: 0.2 hours is 12 minutes, so 8.2 hours is 8:12. A timesheet is added up in minutes first and converted once, so rounding happens only in the total.

Some minutes do not end in a short decimal: 20 minutes is 0.333… hours, shown as 0.33 with two decimals. The result says when it is rounded. Source: the International System of Units (BIPM), which defines the hour as 60 minutes and 3,600 seconds.
