Convert Unix timestamps to dates and dates to timestamps, in any time zone.

How to use

  1. Paste a Unix timestamp to see the date and time it stands for. Leave it empty to see the current time.
  2. If the number has 13 digits, it is in milliseconds: switch Timestamp is in to Milliseconds.
  3. Choose the time zone you want the date in. To go the other way, pick Date to timestamp and enter a local date and time.

How it works

A Unix timestamp is a way of saying when something happened with a single number: the seconds that have passed since midnight at the start of 1 January 1970, in UTC. Computers, databases, logs and programming languages use it because a number is easy to store, compare and subtract, and it means the same moment everywhere. JavaScript and many systems count in milliseconds instead, which gives a number a thousand times larger.

Turning a timestamp into a date is arithmetic: every day counts as exactly 86,400 seconds, so the number is split into whole days since 1970 and the seconds left over (POSIX, Seconds Since the Epoch). For example 1,700,000,000 is 14 November 2023 at 22:13:20 UTC. The time zone only changes how that moment is written on a clock; the timestamp stays the same. The result is also given in the ISO 8601 form used on the internet (RFC 3339), such as 2023-11-14T22:13:20Z.

Unix time ignores leap seconds, and this tool covers the years 1 to 9999. A local time can be ambiguous or missing when the clocks change for daylight saving time, and the tool tells you when that happens.

Frequently asked questions

Is my timestamp in seconds or milliseconds?

Today a timestamp in seconds has 10 digits and one in milliseconds has 13. If the date comes out thousands of years in the future, you have milliseconds.

Does a timestamp depend on the time zone?

No. It counts from one moment in UTC, so it is the same everywhere. Only the date and time written from it differ by zone.

What happens in the year 2038?

Systems that store the timestamp in a 32-bit signed number run out on 19 January 2038. This tool uses larger numbers, so it keeps working.

What does a negative timestamp mean?

It is a time before 1 January 1970 at 00:00 UTC.

Are leap seconds included?

No. Each day counts as exactly 86,400 seconds.
