How to use

  1. Choose a preset or set hours, minutes and seconds, then select Start.
  2. Turn on Sound for a short completion cue while the page stays visible.
  3. Pause holds the remaining time; Continue resumes it. Reset returns to the full duration and lets you edit it.
  4. Choose a display face or open full screen for a larger countdown. Reset also clears the saved timer.

How it works

A countdown subtracts elapsed time from the duration you chose. Remaining time equals duration minus elapsed time, down to zero. The display rounds a positive remainder up to the next second.

Five minutes minus two minutes leaves three minutes. Pause holds that remainder; Continue counts down from it. The timing model follows the W3C High Resolution Time and WHATWG HTML standards.

Your browser can keep the duration and progress on this device to recover after reload. Recovery uses your device clock, so clock changes can affect it. Sleep, closing the browser or blocked sound can prevent an alarm; this is a convenience timer, not a safety-critical alarm.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I boil an egg?

For a hard-boiled egg, about 10 minutes from the moment the egg goes into boiling water. For a soft-boiled egg with a runny yolk, about 5 to 6 minutes. The timer starts at 10 minutes; change it for a softer egg.

What are these times based on?

They assume an egg that goes into already boiling water, with the timer started then. A smaller egg needs a little less time, and starting in cold water needs more.

Why stop the cooking with cold water?

Cooling the egg in cold water as soon as the time is up stops the heat from carrying on. It also helps avoid the greenish ring that forms around an overcooked yolk.
